Bought this from 4wheelparts. The rack came packaged nicely with no damage to the product at all. The finish looks to be spotless. Installation took a little over 3 hours with two people doing the install. The instructions were not extremely detailed but sufficient. I think it would be almost impossible to install this rack without damaging something. One person to hold the uprights in place and runs screws in while the other holds the nuts behind the dash. Excellent product. Very heavy duty. Have not used the rack to haul anything but can’t imagine any issues.
I bought this rack for a 1988 Wrangler. Shipping was quick and well packaged. The tubing is very strong and the finish is excellent. Instaling took two days as the screws for the upper windshield mount are almost imnpossible to reach and had to have a wrench as a back-up. Once installed there was a 9 inch gap between the rear bumper upright and the front portion of the rack. It took a lot of pushiing and pulling plus some bending to get them together. Once together there was heck to pay if I ever wanted to take them apart agein. Which is when I found out the top two side rails are either side specific or end for end specific for the cross bars! (Not mentioned in the instructions) I had to re-drill all the holes to get the cross bars attached. I thought the instructions were marginal at best and had to use some of my own nuts and washers. Once installed the rack looks great and is solid.
Ordered this for my 95 Wrangler back in 2022. Overall the product works nicely, as I have now had it on for a few months. The only issue I had with the installation, was I had to relocate my Antenna. Shipping issue with the freight company, they "misplaced" my shipment for a few weeks. Then when I finally received it, I was missing the two back bottom pieces that bolt to the frame. Ended up contacting Smittybilt, which I can say enough positive things about. They have a great customer service department. Shipped me the missing items quickly and at no additional charge.
I bought this for my 95 YJ. Instructions were too general and didn't have helpful pictures, which would have been fine if they matched what I have better. The front pieces were the hardest because manufacturer didn't seem to realize there are locknuts on the windshield bolts for this model. For me, this meant laying down the windshield and pulling the dash so I could get a wrench on the back side on driver side, which made it much more time-consuming. Also, I had to go buy some longer screws for that because the ones that came with it weren't long enough to go all the way through locknuts. Hinge gaskets were shaped nothing like my hinges so I cut them to fit (that just confused me). Cross bar screws were inconsistent in length and I needed to buy a few at the hardware store for a few that weren't long enough. Instructions also talk about if you have a factory bumper. I have an aftermarket one, so I was a little confused about if it was talking about if you have a bumper at all or no bumper. Again, no pictures of that. YJ is my only point of reference so for that series, I would recommend this product as long as you can work with limited instructions that don't quite match your situation and don't expect to complete it as quickly and painlessly as implied.
Great rack for the price. Easy to assemble barring the somewhat off measurement of one of the cross bars. All the troubles came from my Jeep hardware being seized up.
The instructions are vague, and not model specific. The “powder coating” doesn’t appear to me to be powder coating, and not especially durable. The windshield hinge bolts that have to be removed and reinstalled, were every bit the PITA that all of the reviews said they were. That having been said, once installed it has proven to be a very good rack. I am using it along with a Thule kayak rack, which fit the Smittybilt cross bars without any modifications. My four star rating reflects the “powder coating” issue.
The rack is on after two days. I installed the src bumper and the rear upright on Sat. Sunday, starting early found that to get the lower window hinge bolts out (4), on a 95 yj that I had to lower the windshield and remove the dash to get to the nuts that are not welded. Still ended up drilling the bolts and used a chisel to break them off. I used stainless bolts instead of theirs. I found that you need to prefit all pieces. When all together it looks great and will hold my canoe just fine.
Great product, but hard to install
Directions were not specific enough for the YJ, windshield bolts are not welded in place, better have a long wrench and a skinny arm.
