I have a 1997 Jeep TJ with the 2.5L motor. Ive got a 3" lift with 33/12.50's. Lets face it that motor just isnt big enough to get good performance out of, with the setup i have. Im in the middle of doing a bunch of modifications to my jeep. Rock sliders, drop down tail gate, body lift, spray in liner, It really started out as a budget build with a max limit of 1500 dollars. I ended up breaking the roller bearing in the front differential. After a conversation with a mechanic that knows a hell of a lot more about gearing than i do, i decided to swap gears to 4.56. With the set up that i have and the type of jeeping that i do, which im a weekend warrior and my jeep is a daily driver, these gears will put my jeep back into "stock" configuration as far a power to the wheels is concerened. Yes it is expensive to swap gear, with a parts total of around 800 dollars, which includes new gears, instalation kit for the front and rear diff, new front and rear wheel bearings and seals...(since your in there you might as well replace them). And a labor estimate of 900 dollars to swap everything out. Now im not "rich" by any means, I work full time for Harley Davidson and part time at a local bar and im a full time student. Ive had to "nickle and dime it". Im very happy with the power increase that i have seen both on and off road and would recommend this conversion to anybody concidering it.
