Types of Jeep Wrangler Tops How to Care for Each

The Jeep Wrangler is an amazing vehicle for the outdoorsy lifestyle because it offers something that no other vehicle could do — that is, until Ford unveiled its Bronco revival. What are we talking about? The ability to remove the roof and doors and experience a fantastic open-air motoring experience.

Imagine a convertible that’s also a proper four-door, five-seat vehicle with plenty of luggage space and some amazing off-road abilities out of the box. That’s the Wrangler for you. Of course, there are plenty of aftermarket tops available, and we’re going to take you through how they must be cared for.

Are you looking for a Jeep Wrangler soft top, hard top, bikini top, modular top, sunrider, or flip top? If so, hit up our Jeep Tops, Nets and Accessories section to see what we’ve got. Be warned; the sheer amount of products and diversity of choice on offer means that you can easily get drawn in.

When you’ve found what you like, just ask our friendly off-road experts for their opinion and advice, and they’ll be glad to help. Now, let’s get into tops and top care.

Jeep Soft Tops and How to Care for Them

Jeep soft tops are akin to a convertible top in construction. They are made from tough, hard-wearing, weatherproof, and UV-resistant materials that can include roll-back sunroofs, extra storage pockets, and color choices. A Jeep soft top is a great option for use in spring, summer, and autumn, as you can easily remove it when the mood strikes, to enjoy a great open-air experience.

However, while you can drive through an automated car wash with a Jeep hard top (although we strongly recommend against doing that), don’t even consider doing it with a soft top, as the bristles will rip it to shreds, or at the very least, cause deep scratches and gashes. Caring for your Jeep’s soft top is best done by hand, with water at regular pressure. Use a soft, wet cloth on the windows to avoid scratching them. There are specific top cleaners and protectors which you can use as well. If you have more than one type of top, we’d recommend purchasing a soft top storage bag to keep it safe when not installed.

Jeep Hard Tops and How to Care for Them

A Jeep hard top is a proper hard top for your Jeep that offers the best insulation, weather, and noise protection. It’s typically the sole option for using on your Jeep in winter, although you may be able to get through an exceptionally mild winter with a soft top or modular soft top.

The Jeep hard top is also the easiest to care for, as you can wash it with regular or high-pressure water, soap, and wax it once done. We don’t recommend taking your Jeep through an automated car wash unless you absolutely must, and there’s no other alternative. Your Jeep’s hard top is sturdy but not invincible. Bear in mind that it’s made from fiberglass, and harsh cleaning chemicals can damage it, so stick to regular car shampoo and wax. Also, remember that, unlike soft tops, which can be folded to some degree for storage, a hard top will take up the most space when not in use. There are Jeepies who have installed wall mounts or ceiling hoists in their garages to store their Jeep hard tops when not in use.

Jeep Bikini Tops and How to Care for Them

The Jeep bikini top only covers the roof of your truck, leaving the sides open to the wind and elements. It’s fantastic for pleasant days when out and about on the trails, but it offers extremely limited weather protection. Some bikini tops don’t cover the rear section of your Jeep, leaving rear-seat passengers exposed – although they may like that. Also, you should bear in mind that they offer zero protection from dust, dirt, and rocks that may be kicked up, so we’d recommend refraining from enthusiastic off-roading with a bikini top on.

Cleaning a Jeep bikini top should be done by hand, with regular water and car shampoo. It’s best that you remove it from your Jeep and clean it, since bikini tops are not totally waterproof, and you may end up with a wet and soapy interior if you try to do so while installed. Ensure that you store your Jeep bikini top in a proper top storage bag when not in use and clean it before storing.

Jeep Modular Soft Tops and How to Care for Them

Modular soft tops are sturdier, as they offer better insulation and weather protection than a standard soft top. When caring for them, we’d recommend sticking to the same cleaning regimes and processes as with a standard soft top and storing them in a dedicated bag when not in use. Just like a bikini top, you should clean a modular soft top before storing it too.

Jeep Sunrider and Flip Tops and How to Care for Them

Sunriders and Flip Tops for Jeeps offer an avenue to enjoy some sun on your head but quickly cover up if a rainshower comes your way. They are a form of soft top and must be cared for as such, including storage in a dedicated bag when not in use. Don’t forget to clean them before storing as well.
