Even those that have been living way off of the grid have heard of the Toyota Tacoma. In fact, chances are high that there is one sitting in their driveway possibly under some camouflage netting or lovingly wrapped in aluminum foil. It has been the go to choice for those looking for a solid, capable, and reliable truck with great resale value for decades.

Admittedly, Toyota was resting on its laurels a bit with the Tacoma. After Chevrolet and Ford dropped out of the mid-size truck market to focus on their more profitable full-size trucks, the only competition Toyota faced was Nissan. And, the last time the Frontier was updated was around 1928. Of course, Honda introduced the pseudo-truck dubbed the Ridgeline, but Toyota never took it as a serious threat to the Tacoma. Honda makes great vehicles, but the Ridgeline seemed to occupy that weird space between car and truck much like the Chevy El Camino. Except, it was way less cool than the El Camino.

All of that is in the past. Chevrolet has already introduced the Colorado and the brand-new Ford Ranger is now popping up at dealerships. While the Colorado hasn’t dethroned the Tacoma, Toyota could see its sales slip when the Ranger finally shows up en masse. The age of letting a vehicle, especially a truck, sit around for a decade before updating it is long dead.

To keep the Taco in the top spot of mid-size sales, Toyota has decided to give it a refresh for 2020 with a host of new upgrades. While they are nothing groundbreaking, the new features do help keep the Toyota in the mix amongst growing competition. Can you say power seats? Most vehicles have had this feature since American Gladiators was a thing, but they have been completely absent on the Tacoma (even on the more upscale Limited model). The new 2020 Tacoma will have 10-way power adjustable seats on SR5 models and up. Welcome the 21st century Tacoma.

Other new features include new grille and wheel designs for most models. New multimedia systems include a 7-inch touchscreen for the SR model with an 8-inch screen for all other models. The new systems will finally be Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alex compatible. A new Panoramic View Monitor will provide a view all around the truck for easier maneuvering in tight spaces. Want to see what is under your shiny new Tacoma? Toyota has you covered with the new Multi-Terrain Monitor camera system that shows the trail you are crawling over. The TRD Pro gets updated tuning in its Fox bypass shocks and will now be available in Army Green.

Basically, much of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma remains the same. The new refresh mostly focuses on better tech and some styling chances. Will it be enough to hold off the increasingly strong competition? Only time will tell.
