Comparing The Latest UTV Models

ATVs and UTVs are vehicles that are used off-road for various purposes and are typically not road legal. They are incredibly capable things that can be much more versatile in the rough than even the most kitted-out off-roader. In this article, we will take you through the ATV vs UTV argument, explain what a UTV or Utility Terrain Vehicle is, and why it’s also known as a side-by-side ATV. If you’re looking for stuff for an ATV or UTV, 4 Wheel Parts carries a range of items, so visit one of our stores or check out our website. In the meantime, we hope that this article will clear up any doubts you may have on the topic.

What Is A Side-By-Side ATV

A side-by-side ATV, typically called a UTV, is a Utility Terrain Vehicle that sees occupants sitting side-by-side in rows of one, two, or three. These are typically known as UTVs or side-by-sides, whereas the term ATV refers to the smaller All-Terrain Vehicle that is more suited for recreational and sports use. An ATV typically seats one to two occupants, in a one-behind-the-other fashion, much like a motorcycle.

Despite the name, a UTV or Side-By-Side ATV is just as suitable and capable for a bit of fun. You can pretty much do the same things with a UTV that you can with an ATV. Driving a UTV is also more car-like with a steering wheel and set of pedals, while an ATV is more motorcycle-like, with a handlebar sporting a twist throttle and brake levers.

UTVs also offer a bit more protection to their occupants than ATVs, as they can come with side strakes and even partially enclosed sides, whereas an ATV exposes your body to the elements. Finally, a UTV will almost always offer some form of rollover protection, and some go as far as total weather protection with fully enclosed cabins.

Looking At The Latest ATV & UTV Models

There are several well-known names in the ATV and UTV space across North America. Let’s look at a few and their offerings. You may have heard of some, if not all of these brands, as they represent the best in the industry.

Polaris

Polaris Inc. is a publicly-listed American manufacturer that dabbles in motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, UTVs, NEVs, and mobility solutions for the Defense industry. They have a fine range of ATVs and UTVS, including the RZR, Ranger, and Sportsman marques. If you’re looking for something a little less hardcore, their General range is ample.

Yamaha

The Japanese Yamaha Motor Company is one of the oldest makers of motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, UTVs, and recreational vehicles, among others. Since 1955, Yamaha’s products in these categories have permeated nearly every country, including North America. Check out their ATV and Side By Side pages to view their ranges for general utility, recreation, and pure sports purposes.

Kawasaki

Kawasaki Heavy Industries is another Japanese producer of, among other things, motorcycles, ATVs, and UTVs. The parent company itself was founded 125 years ago. Kawasaki Motors Corp USA offers a broad range of ATV and UTV products that suit a variety of purposes.

Arctic Cat

Another all-American manufacturer, Arctic Cat dates back to 1960 and is now a part of Textron, Inc. Their range of highly capable vehicles includes the Wildcat and Prowler ranges in the side-by-side category and the Alterra range for ATVs.

Honda

A powerhouse in the global automotive industry, Honda produces a range of ATVs and Side-By-Sides under its Powersports division. Renowned for solid Japanese reliability and their go-anywhere attitude, the range encompasses a decent range of Sports and Recreational ATVs, as well as a similar line-up of Side-By-Sides.

Can-Am

A subsidiary of Canadian giant Bombardier Group, Can-Am is manufactured by subsidiary Bombardier Recreational Products, which also handles Ski-Doo, Sea-Doo Rotax, and Lynx. The Can-Am range includes a wide variety of ATV and UTV solutions.

Choosing The Best Utility Vehicle For You

When choosing the best utility vehicle for your requirements, it’s important to first decide if you want an ATV or a UTV. We’ve briefly touched on the differences in our first sub-section, and you should do some further reading as well. For example, some people find the smaller footprint and easier storage and transport of an ATV to be beneficial. In contrast, others appreciate the greater versatility, safety, and security of a UTV. Remember that whatever you choose will need to be trailered around, as these aren’t road-legal to be driven around on the public roads.

Next, determine the level of practicality. Are you interested in all-out performance with very little capacity for storage space, or do you want something more utilitarian that can carry several passengers and cargo? An ATV is typically limited to two occupants, although you can find rare three-person models, while a UTV can take six people in two or three rows of seating.

Finally, determine your capabilities and skill level. It’s no point purchasing the most hardcore ATV or UTV with the highest horsepower and top speed figures if you’re dipping a toe into the water for the first time. Driving an ATV or UTV does require some skill and is not the same as driving your SUV down the highway, so ease into it, get a feel for the vehicle, and develop your skills. Oh, and always wear proper safety gear when operating an ATV or UTV.
