What is a Suspension?

Several components make up your vehicle’s suspension, Coilover springs, coil springs, and leaf springs provide adequate suspension travel. Torsion bars and shock absorbers cushion the ride and reduce vibration. Sway bars reduce body roll in turns. And other parts like bushings, control arms, and tie rods all support your vehicle in its suspension system. These components work together to provide a comfortable ride while also allowing for greater control in rough terrain.

Replacing a single component can greatly impact the overall suspension performance. For example, a stiffer spring will reduce body roll in corners but may also cause increased vibration and harshness. A softer, taller shock absorber will improve comfort over bumps but may decrease cornering stability and handling precision.

You can even modify individual components to fine-tune your suspension setup for ultimate tuning potential. In addition to coilovers and leaf springs, 4 Wheel Parts offers adjustable sway bars and links and adjustable control arms for greater adjustability.

Types of Suspension Systems

There are two main types of suspension systems: rear-end and front-end. Rear-end suspension setups on trucks and other off-road vehicles are typically made up of a solid rear axle and leaf springs. However, some manufacturers opt for a smoother shock and coil rear suspension setup for added comfort. This can usually be found on Jeeps, SUVs, and other larger vehicles.

In contrast, front-end suspensions usually consist of an independent setup with separate control arms and shocks to provide maximum maneuverability on rough terrain. These systems are usually either coil spring or torsion bar based, but some vehicles may also be equipped with air suspension components for adjustable ride height and stiffness.

Rear-end suspensions are usually simpler and less expensive than a complex front-end system with various links, control arms, and bushings. However, solid rear-end suspensions don’t offer the same level of adjustability but are more robust and reliable in rough terrain.

Suspension Components

As previously mentioned, several components must work together in perfect harmony to get the most from your suspension system. These are some of the most common  components that you’ll find in a rear-end suspension system:

  • Leaf Springs – The most common rear-end spring type, leaf springs are designed to support the rear axle, provide additional ground clearance for off-road use, and increase payload capacity. While they are not the most comfortable, leaf springs are incredibly durable and will give you years of reliable service.

  • Shock Absorbers – Also known as dampers, shocks are designed to reduce vibration and harshness while also controlling body roll in turns. Depending on your vehicle’s application, you can choose from various types such as monotube or twin-tube, adjustable or non-adjustable, piggyback or remote reservoirs, and more.

  • Sway Bars – Also known as anti-roll bars, sway bars provide additional stability in turns by minimizing body roll. These are usually adjustable for greater tuning potential and can be used on rear-end suspensions to reduce understeer. Some sway bars may have removable sway bar links for ultimate off-road ability.

  • Control Arms – Control arms attach the rear axle to the chassis, providing additional adjustability in ride height and stiffness. They can be used in combination with coil or leaf springs for increased performance.

  • Bushings – Bushings are responsible for reducing vibration and shock from the rear axle. They come in various types, such as polyurethane or rubber, allowing you to choose what best suits your application. Polyurethane is usually more durable and better for off-road applications, whereas rubber bushings are softer and more comfortable for street driving.

  • Air Ride – Air ride suspensions allow for adjustable ride height and stiffness using an air compressor and shocks. Initially, this technology was used in luxury vehicles, but now it is off-road vehicles looking to get an edge on the competition. Most kits are made up of adjustable airbag shocks, an onboard controller, and a compressor so that you can adjust your ride height and stiffness with the push of a button.

  • Steering Stabilizers – Conquering big boulders over challenging terrain requires precise control, and to get the most out of your suspension, you need a good steering stabilizer. Steering stabilizers increase handling performance by reducing driver fatigue and keeping the suspension system in check during off-road maneuvers. It mounts to the front axle and operates the same way as a typical shock absorber.

So, What’s the Best Setup?

When deciding on the right suspension setup for your vehicle, it’s important to consider both performance and budget. While basic lift kits are less expensive and simpler to set up, they don’t offer as much adjustability or fine-tuning potential compared to a full suspension setup that includes shocks, springs, track bars, swing arms, and more.

Whatever your needs, 4 Wheel Parts has everything you need to tune your suspension setup and get the most out of your ride. With a wide range of components from leading brands like Fox Shocks and King Offroad Racing Suspension and our expert advice team on hand to help pick the right parts for you, we have you covered.
