Winching with the Hi-Lift Jack

Never call a tow truck to get you out of a ditch again when you learn how to winch with the Hi-Lift jack.

A Hi-Lift jack is a multi-faceted tool that comes in handy not just for changing tires or clearing obstacles – you can also use it for winching. In fact, one of the benefits of using a Hi-Lift jack rather than a standard winch is that you can use chain or a tow strap instead of wire rope. If something breaks, the wire rope will snap and this can be potentially dangerous. A chain or tow strap will just fall to the ground, which is much safer. Our 4 Wheel Parts experts are here to show you how to properly winch with a Hi-Lift jack.

  1. Make sure that the top clamp is in line with the bar.
  2. Install one end of a chain or tow strap securely to the vehicle to be winched, and securely attach the other end to the top clamp of the Hi-Lift jack.
  3. Face the base of the jack away from the vehicle. Use a shackle if the chain or tow strap will not fit through the top clamp of the jack.
  4. Take another chain or tow strap and secure one end to a fixed, stable object and the other end around the lifting nose of the jack. Do not attach the chain or shackle to the bottom hole of the lifting nose. If the fixed object is a tree, follow tread lightly principles and use a tree strap.
  5. Operate the Hi-Lift jack as you would for raising or lowering a load.
