Tips & Tricks To Know Before You Replace Your Suspension

When a vehicle’s suspension is in good shape, it will increase reliability, reduce damage to expensive parts, and aid in attacking off-road terrain. It makes sense then that one of the most commonly requested parts categories we get asked about at 4 Wheel Parts is suspension replacement or upgrades. What makes them so sought after is that a suspension upgrade adds a lot of positive improvements to the vehicle — and that’s not to mention how it improves aesthetics too.

The suspension system is a broad term that encompasses shock absorbers and their accessories, such as leaf springs, coil springs, leveling kits, steering stabilizers, air ride suspension, lowering & sport suspension, and body lifts, but for this article, we are going to break down the suspension into two major parts: the struts, and the shock absorbers.

Get an idea of where to begin before replacing your suspension. For the uninitiated, it is a large endeavor — but don’t sweat it too much, as we’ll enlighten you on suspension replacement costs, when and how you should change them, and some tips to help you get the perfect job.

While we are talking about suspension, 4Wheel Parts has been in the business for decades, and as such, we provide some of the most well-known names in the suspension business like Pro Comp, Rubicon Express, and FOX.

Why You Should Replace Your Suspension

First and foremost, the most important reason to replace your suspension is for your and other people’s safety. To break it down, while worn suspension does make for an uncomfortable ride, it also affects the stopping power, handling, steering, and overall safety of your truck or SUV.

A new or upgraded suspension system can enhance the driving experience as well as improve safety. It is an integral part of a vehicle and has to be taken care of well to get the best out of it. Your suspension system consists of moving parts that take a hell of a beating to keep you comfortable and safe. This increases the chances of wear and tear as well as breakage.

How Often Should You Change It?

The “when” of replacing your suspension or shocks is not set in stone. But an agreed average is about 50,000 miles for the struts and shocks, as these are made to take the punishment. Moreover, if you feel your suspension is bumpy, unstable, or even has a visual cue such as leaking fluids, then you bet your suspension needs to be looked at. A simple test like bouncing your vehicle and monitoring the rebound rate will roughly indicate the suspension’s state.

How to Replace Your Suspension?

So now you’ve found out that your suspension is worn or damaged, and it’s time to replace it. How do you go about it? Let’s break it into stages and see.

1. Spring Compressor

The first task is to obtain a spring compressor. On most vehicles, there’s a spring that is combined with the struts. A spring compressor will help you safely compress and decompress the spring for safe removal and installation of the spring. Fair warning, this maneuver is precarious and should be done with the utmost care as a single misstep will cause damage to the vehicle or injury to you.

2. Raising the Vehicle

A common tip is to lift one side of the vehicle at a time using the car jack. Another option is to use a lift, if available.

Take precautions to ensure the vehicle is secured before going to the next step.

3. Removing the Old Shock Absorbers and Struts

With the spring compressor in hand and the vehicle hoisted/lifted and secured, it is time to start with the removal of the shocks and the struts.

First, the wheels need to come off so that you can reach the spring. With the spring compressed for struts, look for bolts at the bottom of the shock or strut that keeps it in place. For shocks, pull the bolt out completely. On struts, make sure to loosen the bolts enough and not remove them altogether. Another bolt or nut is on the top of the shock or strut. This needs to be taken off to finish removing the shock or strut.

4. Installing Your New Shocks or Struts

To install the new parts, follow step #3 in the reverse order to get it on. Make sure that the bolts are secure, as you don’t want the shock or strut to come loose while driving.
