Reviews: Tuffy Security Tailgate Enclosure - 299-01

This is an awesome add-on if you drive your Jeep around town with anything valuable in it. It's totally secure, and looks great. I can now drive with my top off without having to carry all my wife's purchases from store to store. :) It's also great for off-roading storage, but NOT your recovery gear since you need to open the tailgate to get at anything. The install was the easiest thing I've put on my Jeep yet. A few bolts, wing nuts, and some rubber edging - done. It took about 10 minutes.

For work I travel quite a bit and have to carry computer equipment. However, I still want to be able to take off my top in the summer time. This product strikes a fair price without sacrificing your security. It would take significant time to bust into this unit; so I think it would deter most any thief, unless they just steal your entire Jeep. Installation was quick and easy. It took me about an hour to read the directions and assemble the unit together. It is very helpful to have an extra person on stand by to help you install in the back of your Jeep. If you aren't careful with the sharp edges you can scratch up your top on the inside. Lastly, an extra set of hands is necessary to install the last four carriage bolts. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and the ease of installation. The one con is that this unit would be a pain to take in and out all the time, however I don't intend to ever remove it.

Excellent product and exactly as described. Install was pretty basic, but instructions could have been more detailed. Great for use when top/doors off, locking up electronics and other valuables while shopping, etc. Will need to add an interior light in the "trunk" space as it is so dark inside the storage area. I now feel safe putting everything inside the locked stoarge area and leaving my Jeep open and/or unlocked.

Installed this a few days ago and am overall satisfied. I think though the design could be a bit better. A previous design which I've seen has the front and top pieces as two separate pieces which are bolted together once in the Jeep. The current design is one large piece connected via a hinge, which makes installing and removing much more difficult. You'll only want to purchase this if you only plan to install it and leave it, with rarely ever taking it out. It isn't an easy process to remove or install due to its one-piece design, size, and weight. The other issue with it is that the factory cargo floor mat won't fit under the front panel which is bolted to the floor. This design reuses the factory cargo bolts to hold it, and the bolts just aren't long enough to accommodate the added thickness of the mat. I'm going to have to pick up a couple longer bolts so that I can continue to use the factory cargo mat. I wish that they had just provided new bolts to use to accommodate it. Other than those issues, this product is very well built. I have no concern that this will protect what is inside of it. The only way someone is getting in is if I either leave the Jeep unlocked, or they have a blowtorch to cut a hole.

To be honest when the UPS guy delivered this I almost refused it as I have used Tuffy products for years and was expecting something burly and welded. Even when i unpacked it felt flimsy and I guess my experience with other Tuffy products made me simply expect more. I decided to go ahead and install it anyway since I waited so long for it to arrive and really had a need for some lockable storage when the top was down. After finishing the install ( less than an hour by myself) I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually like it. It looks good and does the job well. I only have a couple complaints and they are pretty minor. One is that you have to reuse 2 torx head bolts. Normally I wouldn't care but because of the angle of the steel on this it's nearly impossible to use a drill or impact with a torx bit to re-install these two screws without stripping them out. My other complain is I wish the lid was easier to remove when you wanted to haul something big, put the dog in the back, etc. All in all I am happy with the value in what I got for the money. It does a nice job, looks good, and didn't cost a fortune

I run my JKU topless with trail doors most of the year. However, that presented an obvious security problem. I never even wanted to stop to eat unless the Jeep was in direct sight. Now stuff can be secured even with no top and doors. I have not yet attempted to strap an ice chest to it yet...
