Reviews: Smittybilt Rear Lockable Storage Boxes

I needed something secure for my camera gear. There is nothing worse than worrying about your gear when you leave your Jeep unattended, even for a few minutes without a secure locking storage box. My camera gear is large. I don't have a simple point and shoot camera. It's also great to transport my guns and ammo. I don't want those to fall in the wrong hands. Now I can go inside a restaurant, store, or wildlife reserve feeling safe and secure that my gear will still be there when I return. This box was easy to install and came with good instructions. It makes use of all the space it can in the back of my TJ. Mine came with a motion sensing light so that when I roll the drawer opened, I can see my gear. All the hardware for different model Jeeps is included along with 2 keys for the lock. It also has 4 spring loaded D rings on top so that you can use tie-downs to keep your gear from entering your driving space. Just pile up your camping gear on top of the box and tie it down. Mine came in a huge box that seemed to hold up well to UPS' handling and the product didn't have a scratch on it. If you ask 4WD to match its competitor's price, they will and you'll save $50. But I don't know if 4WD includes the light or not.

I am very pleased so far with my new storage box. It came well packaged and included all the parts needed for multiple installation options. Install was fairly easy, although having a second person to help would make it much easier at times. My 2015 JKU has the floor mounted subwoofer, I was concerned this might be an obstacle, but it was not. I installed on top of the sub and cargo mat and attached using two anchors to the rear of the box. I previously had installed lifts to slightly recline my rear seats, but that did not present a problem either. Using the rear tie down anchors you can slide the box forward or back as need to fit properly with the seats. I did loose access to the jack compartment and door hinge/roof bolt compartment as the box prevents that from being raised without moving the box. The box included a storage back for the jack which can be stored in the box, or beside it. My box also included a magnet mount motion detecting flashlight that helps you see inside the box. It is a nice added touch, I will have to see how it holds up though. The powder coat finish looks nice, but it also my only complaint. The finish is not very thick, and scratches relatively easily.

Great fit, easy installation, looks great, and keeps our Jeep better organized. And, don’t throw away the foam packing. I cut mine to size and insulated the drawer; bottom and sides. No rumbling around and it’s quiet.

Solid storage box, Holds a ton! Smooth function. Does it make noise? Yes, when you first install it and it will drive you bat crap crazy; HOWEVER!, the locking mechanism is adjustable. Once you find and adjust to “the sweet spot” the box doesn't make a sound. Box is heavy (I’d say 2 tons) and meant to be a permanent install. If you have a 2 door jeep and never use the rear seat dump it and get this I’d also get a good chiropractor if you plan to take it in and out.

Quality product and versatile installation. I do not have to move the base speaker. If you attach hinges so you can lift it, the trunk space storage can be used also. 08 jk unlimited

It’s exactly what I was looking for. I was thinking it would add noise but no rattles and no squeaking. I installed it with hinges like some of the other reviewers did. Not I can put the seats down and stand it in end if I need to haul something big. It’s built really well and handles a good amount of weight on top with no buckling. Another tip I saw was to use the packing foam sheets to line the drawer. 4WP had it the next day after I ordered it. All around satisfied.

Bolts to floor pan for secure storrage for tools and recovery gear. It fills the space behind the rear seat but, no worry of dangerous flying equipment off road. Well made secure storage for valuables when away from the vehicle.

Storage Box fits perfectly in back of jeep and appears to be well made.

Just threw this in the back of the JK and I could not be happier with how well this fits, how well it's built, and how much secure storage it is going to provide. I also just wanted to add, for those with a similar setup, that I have super stuffed molle bags on the inside of my tailgate, as well as the rear seat recline kit, and this beast still fits perfectly! Couldn't be happier. I plan to use all the included foam packaging to line the vault and keep the noise and vibration to a minimum. Thanks 4wd!
