Reviews: Smittybilt HD Pivot Tire Carrier - 7743

I had 4WP install this bad boy on my 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. I'm still on stock Rubicon wheels/tires, the unit is very strong. No shaking, no noise, very secure. Two antenna mounts, so I can finally put my GMRS/CB antennas on opposite sides of the tailgate! Highly recommended.

I love the design. Strong, and smart design. Two antenna mounts, one on each side. I haven't purchased a Hi-Lift mount yet. I left the license plate on the Jeep steel bumper, no need to move it. Great looking, very happy I bought it.

This is a well made piece. Definitely heavy duty and looks great. Love how it completely replaces the factory hinge set up, and adds reinforcement. Terrific adjustability and multiple tire sizes.

Great tire carrier although it is great some of the instruction aren’t very clear on how to install. Here are some pointers. -When removing them Camera from the OEM housing removing all bolt and torque screws. And using a hammer and a screw driving with the camera housing facing up, tap on the torque screw hole until the camera falls down. The instructions say to use a heat gun to remove the camera but that doesn’t work. The housing is held down with clamping force. - The SB7743 didn’t come with a license relocation bracket. What I did was using one of the kit part that mounts the third brake light , I made a hole on the part that hold the spare tire and mounted so that the third rake light stays behind the tire. This allows me to use the same lug nuts that come from the factory. Overall this tire carrier was easy to install. Give yourself about 4 hours to figure out everything

Quality components & pretty easy fitup. Solved my tailgate rattle issue with a 35". The packaging was super-premium. All the pieces fit to the Jeep without any drama. DIY install in just a few hours. The third brake light solution & wire handling definitely looks like an afterthought and is quite junk, in my opinion. Unfortunately the instructions for this thing are absolute dog water. The part numbers don't align to the bags in your hand & they call out parts you don't receive. There's also extra parts shipped that you don't use, or at least I think you don't use, the instructions never mentioned them. The pictures are in color, which is great, but the pictures themselves aren't very useful.

Overall a very good product. Reason for 4 stars is because of a couple things. 1. Hinge came connected to the tail gate bracket, but set screws were not tightened. It was making a noise when I hit bumps so I was trying to find out why. The top bolt had backed out almost 1/2 and inch. This could have been a bigger issue if I wasn’t looking for the issue. 2. Says it will hold up to 40” tire. I have a 38” tire and it has flex. Good when your going down the road, but rattles when your off road. Adding the bump stops back on from the factory should stop this, but I need to find out how to adjust the distance before I can say for sure.

This carrier looks great on my jeep and is very heavy duty. Only giving 4 stars because I had to modify the pivot a little bit so I could place the tire on the setting closest to the tailgate as I have extremely offset wheels and didn't want the spare sticking out so much. Also the license plate relocation bracket had to be purchased separately, it is not included.
