Yes it can be done, ask the boys in Tigard Or. They're good!
About 3 years ago, I rebuilt the rear end on my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7L with the C9.25 rear end. I did this as a result of plans to change gears from stock 3.55 to 4.10, and I installed this into a truck that his my daily driver as well as an off-road toy. When I installed this, I used the G2 4.10 gears and did not touch the axles, against all warnings from other mechanic friends in the area I lived in. Three years later, ignoring that warning has finally caught up to me. After three years of heavy off-road, mud, and rock climbing abuse, one of the OEM axles did a clean spin to oblivion. When I popped the diff cover off, there was debris and muddy grease in the housing, but the TrueTrac is still looking as new as ever. I would definitely have to say, the absolute greatest feature is the automatic torque biasing. Many times I made it up a mountian or through a mud hole in only 2WD. If you have existing knowledge of assembling rear ends and order the gear/pinion install as well as the install kit for this bad boy, its not too hard and can be done in a day. It is worth every dollar spent. Just be sure to not cut corners and bring your axles up to par.
I finally got some snow so I could see if the TrueTrac works - and it works great. With the OEM open diff in my Dodge Ram 1500, the slightest snow or sand would make one wheel spin and I went nowhere. Now, I just keep moving. Still need 4x4 for deep or steep stuff. I'm not a hard-core off roader, so the TrueTrac is perfect for me.
I got my Hemi Ram second hand. Why any dealer lets a pickup get ordered without some kind of limited slip in the North-East is insane!! The factory option at time of order is $70!! If you have a truck without a locker and want one, this is the way to go unless you are a super serious off-roader! Better locking than any clutch type unit I ever owned, and smoother and quieter that a "bang-go" true locker. The best of both worlds!! In my case, this cost 2/3 of what the factory clutch type part would have cost. I have pulled a few boats out on a dirt ramp in 2WD that I used to use 4WD-Low on. Just Awesome!
This unit compared to the limited slip from the factory is a significant improvement in quality and performance. The stock unit, when used with bigger tires performs at a 2 on a scale of ten. The Detroit Locker is a big 10.
