My wife is short and it's difficult for her to hop into the Jeep, so I came upon these side steps as a solution for her. I wouldn't recommend them to take out and get beat up on boulders. They are heavy duty metal, not plastic and would take a good deal of beating but they're too expensive to destroy on a boulder. If you're going out to do that then put back on the factory rock rail. The steps are all metal except for the plastic end covers. The installation is long and complex. One thing that wasn't clear to me is where to splice into the factory wiring. You do that on the passenger side. The only thing I wasn't happy about is you run two wires up through the drain hole in the floorboard of the Jeep on the passenger side. I may get some wire and reroute those later, but for now they're installed as instructed. The wire for the led lights were too short on the driver side and I had to extend them. I found the crimp connectors were difficult to get to connect for me, the wires kept pulling out so I redid those connectors. The steps look great and operate smoothly. You can hear them and feel them extend and retract. I get lots of complements on them. They are expensive but high quality. They look as good and operate as good as the factory steps on our Expedition. A very nice upgrade to the Gladiator.
