Smittybilts Smart Cover Tonneau Covers include high tech features not found in other inferior tonneaus. The heavy duty 6061 aircraft grade aluminum frame features reinforced corners that are completely covered in rich leather grain vinyl. The Smittybilt speed lock system allow you to install and remove the cover with lightning speed. These are custom made to fit your application perfectly.
I purchased this on sale, and have had this tonneau for a year now, and it has held up well. This is one of the few folding tonneaus that I was able to find with the cam style clamps on all four corners, and is reasonably priced. Overall this is a good product and has worn well in the summer heat, and showed no signs of being brittle in the winter.
The cover installs easily (with a few caveats), and comes with a storage bag for those times when you want to store it, and have full usage of the bed.
The installation caveats are as follows:
1) For the Tacoma application, you are provided "slide-in" clamping points for the factory utility rail. These are 2 piece components consisting of a threaded aluminum block that inserts into the rail, and a steel stamped piece for the cam to hook onto, with 2 allen screws to tension the block to the bedrail to prevent movement. With the set I received, the aluminum block was oversized, and would not slide into factory rail. The factory customer service answer was to grind down the blocks to fit. I initially tried this, and after getting one block close to fitting, decided that utilizing another company's adapter was easier, and less frustrating. I ordered a set of rail adapters from tonnopro.com. These are one piece extruded AL clamping points that easily slide into place on the factory rail.
2 )Once I sorted out the rail clamping point problem, the next stumbling block was that the rear bow and clamps were positioned too far back on the frame to allow the clamps to engage the mount points on the utility rail. As it turns out there was a page missing from the included instructions that details which screws to loosen to slide the bow to the correct position.
3) The final issue is the gasket or weather seal material. This is a foam type seal, which does a really good job at keeping water out of the bed. I have taken this through high pressure carwashes, and noted no water intrusion into the bed. The only short fall, is that it seems to absorb water to a point, and will then freeze to the bed and tailgate in cold weather. Liberal usage of silicone spray on the foam seal in cold weather will help to reduce this. I note this, as the last cover I had was a Rugged Liner brand cover, that used automotive style rubber weather stripping which did not experience this phenomenon.
Overall this is a good cover, at a reasonable price (just factor in another $25 for a better utility rail installation kit).
