Few things are more rewarding than camping in the backcountry with family and friends, and roof top tents are a great way to set up camp in a hurry. Smittybilts latest product, the Overlander Tent, is now available in a new XL size that can sleep up to four. One man operation allows it to fold out in seconds to full height so you don't have to mess around with tent pegs and ropes like normal ground tents. Fully waterproof so you don't have to worry about being caught out in the rain. The Overlander tent offers all the features you need for the best camping experience. Note: XL tent is for trailer use only and not compatible with SRC cage kits.
We are happy with our purchase. The tent is big. Easy setup. 5- 10 my max and you are ready to camp. Initial installation was a bit of an issue because the instructions were not that clear, a quick YouTube search and done.
Thing is huge. Could litterally sleep my whole family if we wanted to. Well constructed. cant wait to start using it
Bought this three years ago and we've used it pretty thoroughly, though still not as much as I'd like. Construction is solid, which pleasantly surprised me given the much lower price compared to the better known RTT brands. The only corner I feel they cut was the mattress, the foam for which pretty much deflated within the first year. Called 4WP and they exchanged the mattress for free even though mfgs warranty was over. Couldn't be happier. Even with the new mattress it was a bit too thin. Bought an additional 2" king size foam mattress on amazon and put it on top of the stock mattress. Now we have 4" of foam to sleep on and it's heavenly, if a bit hot during the warmer months. My biggest advice if you're a first-time RTT buyer: 1. Rig up some sort of early warning system to remind you the tent is on the roof so you don't destroy it driving into a parking garage. 2. Always let it air out before you store it. Moisture will mold it up VERY QUICKLY, but if you're diligent about airing it out, it'll keep that new tent smell for a long time.
The folding mechanism is great and I am excited to use the tent. HOWEVER, The instructions on this thing are worthless. I spent an hour on it trying to figure it out and gave up. I have spent a few hours searching for instructions on YouTube. I am now waiting for a weekend where I have enough time to fight my way through it, and a friends help.
Very strong and stable. Setup instructions are a bit vague, but can be figured out. Highly recommend setting up at home first, to figure it all out. Being able to open the top and having a view of the night sky is amazing.
I have had this on top of our rig for a few years now; I didn't want to review it until it survived a few seasons here in Colorado. I have used it in the 100 degree desert heat of Moab and the 0 degree temps of 13,000 foot alpines in Colorado. It stays on top of the xterra year round and has survived 100's of trails and two winters with absolutely no flaws. I am buying my brother one for christmas...its that good.
Works great with the annex on top of my custom trailer
I camp a lot and usually like to have a base camp and then hit the trails so installing the tent on a trailer so you don't have to break camp each day is a big plus. I used the Smittybilt XL tent as part of my trailer build. The tent is awesome. The only issue I have is there is no instructions on how to install the poles that hold open the flaps or how to hold open the doorway flap.
Q: Do you have to have a rack on your vehicles roof or can it direct mount on a 2020 Jeep JL 4 door? Answer this question
A: I believe it can be mounted on you jeep there. I have it mounted on a roof rack.

A: You'll need a rack. I believe they make some models that integrate into your jeep model. Look at Rhino-Rack Vortex SG 2 Bar. Seems to be a good priced option.

A: Hello, A roof rack or a bed rack is required. Often with the JL's people choose a bed rack for overlanding. Thanks for checking us out.

Q: cant i mount the tent and open it from front to back on my roof to the bed of my truck Answer this question
A: Yes that works but with the XL it will be wider than the truck bed
Answered by Tucker from Logan, UT on 06/28/2021
A: It's not common but can be done. You will need to make measurements of the tent as the XL will overhang the sides of the cab. The cab rack that you will use is also be important to the static weight and max weight capacity. It's also good to have a bed rack where the other half of the tent can rest on. This will relieve any angle strain on the ladder depending the length of the truck bed. I also use the 75 degree angle rule for the ladder. The tent mounting brackets can be moved and would require you to drill new holes.

A: Yes. It will require a bed mounting rack and will require the rails on the tent to be mounted perpendicular to normal.
