I just installed my Smittybilt Defender roof rack. The rack itself I would rate 4 stars as the rear Defender label was pop riveted upside down. Fit and finish was 5 stars. The mounting kit is another matter. The brackets have only small welds on one side in less than half of the length where the vertical plate is attached to the base plate. This is where the rubber meets the road. If these welds fail then the rack can come off. I guess Smittybilt saved a buck on reducing the weld length on all the brackets. The mounting kit was missing nuts and one of the bracket plates was not threaded for the attachment bolt. This dropped the overall review to just 3 stars. Too bad as the roof rack is very nice.
I am looking for shorter brackets for my 1987 FJ60 (I cant fit in the garage). What is the height on these - gutter to rack mount?
How does that compare to the Smittybuilt Part Number: S/BHD-6?
Answer this question
The HDS mounts are 3.25” tall, while the HD mounts are 6.25” tall.
