5.0 Super satisfied customer.

Haven't had a chance to use it camping yet. But after setting it up on my trailer I am impressed with the construction and easy setup.

5.0 Smittybilt Gen2 Overlander Tent XL

Very impressed with all aspects of this purchase. The shipping was quick and affordable, especially for a freighted item. The packaging was great too. Between the cardboard, foam, and fiberboard all items were well protected. The XL tent itself is massive. It is very well built and looks to be pretty rugged. There’s nothing that comes close on price either for this much space, Wasn’t super excited about the additional poles needed to deploy the canopy (or at least an option to not use), but it has grown on me after getting used to setting it up. The annex is what brings this whole monstrosity together and makes the canopy worth it. You have some serious space to use. As others have said the lower part of the door on the annex does not secure, but I’m sure can be remedied with some Velcro. Not that I’d want to, but you could camp 8+ people with the full setup. It is also 100% kid approved. Mine love it.

5.0 Love the tent but some cons

I bought the tent, and for the price it's great!. Get a little cold In the 30's would like for them to come out with a insulation attachment. 2 we had quite a bit of condensation one night. But overall wasn't bad. I recommend this tent 100%! Super comfortable and convenient.

5.0 Great purchase!

Great purchase so far. I previously used a hard shell rtt but with a growing family I needed to purchase something that would accomadate a family of 5. I was concerened the setup and take down of this rtt was going to be a major pain compared to what I was used to but its simple and easy. So glad i bought this, way better than sleeping on the ground!

5.0 Great tent!

Tent is awesome! Took it last week with the family (myself, wife, and 2 kids) for a test run. Really easy set up, plenty of space for all four of us to sleep comfortable, and we loved the feel of being up high above the ground. The tent could use some better insulation if you plan on using it on colder nights. Our second night the temp dropped to the high 30’s and the tent was cold. But as far as keeping us dry and out of the wind it worked like a charm. And it’s not as heavy as it looks in the packaging, was able to lift it up into and off my 4Runner with another persons help easily.

5.0 Great Tent for the price

Very happy with the XL so far. Used it for the first time last weekend on a camping trip in Arizona, and was super impressed with the quality for the price. Mattress was a little firm, but I’m used to regular tent camping so it didn’t bother me that much. Overall very happy with my purchase, and highly recommend it for anyone on a budget.

Q: Received my XL Gen 2 RTT and opened the instruction manual and it reads this: "XL tents require a minimum of 3 crossbars to mount" Ugh... super disappointing. Can it really not be mounted on 2 bars? A 3rd bar costs a lot of $$$ Answer this question

A: My instructions didn't mention anything about a Third crossbar? My tent is mounted by 2 Crossbars and in my opinion is plenty sturdy to support the tent.

Answered by OlderLander from Sacramento on 04/13/2021

A: I mounted mine on two cross bars at each end and with the weight of two people in it after 1 trip/use you can slightly see a bow. I would recommend 3 cross bars

Answered by Azlander from Az on 04/01/2021

A: That all depends on your vehicle and rack setup. If your racks are capable of holding the empty weight of the tent while in motion, you should be okay. The main thing to look at is the static and dynamic load capacities of your vehicle roof (if using an SUV) or roof rack when using a truck. The tent weighs roughly 140 pounds empty. So your dynamic load rating should be at least that much (and more is always better). Then add the weight of people for the static load rating.

Q: Does it use the ladder for support, or can you pull the ladder up once you’re in the tent?  Answer this question

A: Its not a fort. Sorry Caleb

Answered by Anonymous from ca on 02/25/2021

A: The ladder is required for support, given the way the ladder is mounted beneath the tent and telescopes with gravity I don't think you could pull it up and secure it even if it weren't required to support the tent.

Answered by MKVIII from Weld County, Colorado on 10/06/2020

A: You need the ladder for support.

Q: I have a Mazda CX-5 2015 and it has the rails on top can the Gen 2 XL mount on the rails without crossbars? And on the internet I can find that the Mazda roof rack is rated for 165 does anyone know if this is accurate?  Answer this question

A: Looks like you will be about the max weight for the factory rack. When you add people too it. You are sure to exceed your weight limit. I would think of a upgraded roof rack if I where you.

Answered by Shawn from Texas on 03/12/2021

A: It cannot be mounted without crossbars. It sits on and bolts to the crossbars. In addition, the tent is pretty heavy so you need to make sure the roof rack can handle the dynamic and static load.

Answered by slgriner from Atlanta, GA on 03/12/2021

A: The cross rails are required for the tent to mount to the rack of the vehicle. I can’t speak to the weight capacity of you vehicle. However, Smittybilt suggests only racks designed to support heavy loads should be used for the XL tent. Thus being Jeep Wrangler full cab rack systems, and truck bed racks. The gross weight rating of the XL tent is over 600 pounds so that’s a factor that has to be taken into account as well. Most manufacturers rate the roof racks for a dynamic load (which is the weight while on the road moving), but you should also get the static load rating (maximum load the roof can take parked).

Answered by Jordan from Minnesota on 03/06/2021

Q: Is the rack included Answer this question

A: The roof rack is not included.

Answered by Mikey from Fort Pierce FL. on 03/02/2021

A: Nope.

Answered by rich_ob from Colorado on 02/27/2021

A: No, this is just for the tent.

Answered by Christian from 4WP HQ on 02/26/2021

Q: Can this be mounted so it folds open over the tailgate? What are the stowed dimensions? Answer this question

A: Not sure about the smaller one. But definitely not the XL, the XL is as long as my long bed Tacoma which is 6ft.

Answered by Zach from California on 02/17/2021

A: I guess it would depend on your rack set up, it would be entirely to large though, the folded dimensions are 47"W 76"L and 11.5"H. I have it on my short bed silverado and it pretty much sits flush with the rear bumper and is about 2 to 3 inches away from the rear window.

Answered by Jayy from California on 02/17/2021

A: A. Yes is can B. Approx 47x76x11 inches
