Not as pictured, tech support confused, QC
The pictured product is the gutter mount bracket. Do NOT buy these if that’s what you’re looking for. These brackets slide onto ‘97-‘01 OEM XJ roof rails. Tech support between 4WP and Smittybilt gave me opposite answers, and neither were correct for my rack (40504). The QC is also poor: They sent me an unthreaded nut (useless). Apart from these frustrations, the brackets are easy to assemble and install. They feel SOLID mounted to the OEM rails with the Defender rack mounted. Can’t speak on longevity of the product, as I installed today. Don’t let this deter you from buying, just know exactly what you’re buying.

Q: the picture for this product here on your website shows it mounted on the rain gutter........ where does it really mount to ?? Answer this question
A: Hello You are correct the brackets will hook into the factory roof rack rails. They will slip inside the slot then have a second bracket that holds it in place. To get a more correct picture pull up part number S/B DS16-4 These are not the clamps you need but will give you a better idea.

Q: I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with roof rack. It says this mounts to the exiting roof rack but in the image it is a gutter mount. How exactly does it install? Do the factory roof rack bars have to come off or does it mount to those? Answer this question
A: New Dude- Thanks for your question. The Smittybilt Defender Roof Rack Mounting Kit for Jeep mounts with the factory roof rack, not too. The mounts grab the drip rail. The factory roof cross bars do not need to be removed to fit the rack.
