The perfect add-on to your Jeep when you have oversized tires. Original Jeep tailgates are unable to support the weight of an oversized tire- especially when you are off road. This bumper mount tire carrier takes the load off the tailgate and puts it on the frame mounted bumper. Each tire carrier incorporates grease fitting to keep the hinge mechanism running smooth. Constructed of the finest materials and Zinc under-coated, Dual Stage durable powder coat painted, this heavy-duty off road design is built to last. Will hold up to 35" tire. Available in Textured Black only.
Installed on a 1983 CJ7: Didn't have to drop the tank and everything lined up perfectly, biggest issue I had was trying to install by myself and a few rusty bolts on my jeep all in all looks great

very well built but be prepared to work.
The bumper and tire carrier are very well built and you will not be disappointed with the quality of them. However like other people have said, you do have to drop the gas tank completely and you will need to make the holes on your jeep fit the bumper, so be prepared to work. I didn't have to use the template to drill holes, mine already had them but nothing lined up...kind of frustrating, if this is a know problem you would think Smittybilt would fix this problem. But if you have a die grinder or at least a dremel you will be fine.
With removing my old hitch and dropping the gas tank I was able to get it all installed in about 4hours...
In the end if you want a sturdy bumper and aren't afraid to work this is a good money saving bumper and it gets that darn spare off the tailgate!

I appreciate the other reviews, I went into the install with some clear expectations. I have an '06 TJ and yes you do need to drop the fuel tank, but its pretty easy, it's only 3 bolts and 6 nuts. I also removed the exhaust hanger just so it was easier to get a socket on a few of the bolts for the new bumper. I did not have any of the issues that I read about on here such as, holes not lining up or bolts not threading. The only problem that I had on the install was that when I opened the gate on my Jeep the hinge would hit the grease nipple in the top of the pivot post for the tire carrier. This could be my fault but i was careful to line up the template and everything else lined up. What I did was, I used the nipple to grease the fitting and then replaced it with a bolt. So far so good, I have only had it on for a few days and no problems. I do feel much better with the tire off the gate, I have 35x12.5x15 BFG Mud Terrains.

Not as easy as you would think
Good heavy duty bumper. Material difficult to drill and tap, as I added two of the removed bumpers to the carrier supports. Used the template to drill additional mounting holes per the instructions but they did not align and required enlarging and elongating. Extra hardware made it confusing too. Had to drop gas tank and push forward to allow access for installing mounting bolts. Good bumper/carrier for the money but don't expect an easy install on a '99 Wrangler.

The bumper was easy to install, works great and looks great. Yes, the gas tank needs to be dropped a little to get to the bolts from the backside; its not that big a deal. The bolt holes do line up just fine if you use the template provided and take your time to center punch the holes right. I had not problem installing the bumper. There is a problem with rattling from the latch on the swingaway. I placed a piece of adhesive pad used for furniture and the problem was solved. The instructions are very easy to read; just follow everything carefully and will install easy.

Classic Bumper w/ Tire Carrier
Looks good now that it's on.
I own a LJ so I didn't even need to drop the gas tank. Should have been a 1-2 hour job without that step, but took much longer. Bolts didn't line up even with correct use of the template provided. A couple bolts were back threaded and wouldn't screw in. The tire carrier rattles a lot when driving and hit the tail lights when opened. Overall i'm pretty disappointed and probably wouldn't buy again.

Classic Rock crawler bumper
Good price and good heavy duty product would like Smitybilt to come up with accessories like jack holder and jerry can holders.

This tire carrier is sweet on paper. In order to install it you HAVE to remove the gas tank. Or just skip four bolts which makes me feel uncomfortable using the full sized hitch or d rings. Also one of the bolts was off so I have to remove the bumper and expand one of the stock holes. So be prepared for several hours worth of work and a trip to sears to buy the missing nuts and bolts to mount the bracket.

Small Weak Link in a Good Product
This replacement bumper and tire carrier are solidly built and overall quite good, however there is a weakness in the latch system. There is a plastic "guide" that fits on the bottom of the bumper to help hold the tire carrier in place when closed and it has now broken twice. Smittybilt replaced the first one, but now sends me to 4Wheel Parts for the second replacement. I asked if this was a design problem and the Smittybilt rep told me it was just a regular use replacement part! This part is not like windshield wipers...it should not wear out! Also since this plastic guide broke it loosened up the other latch assembly and the handle rattled loose and fell off returning from Colorado. The overall bumper and tire carrier is great, but this latch assembly is a weak link in an otherwise well designed product. Oh well, I guess I will just keep using really big zip ties to keep the tire carrier from swinging free when I am driving down the highway!
Why extra part needed for 85 cj? Just for bolt pattern? Can I just drill holes myself thus not needing a additional part?

Yes, you can drill the factory frame hoes out to use 1/2" bolts. then it would be a direct bolt-on installation. Thank you.
