The Powertrax No-Slip Traction Systems are the latest design in traction-adding differential technology. They combine the smooth operation of a limited-slip differential with the traction performance of a locking differential. A precise synchronization mechanism eliminates the ratcheting sounds typical of other locking differentials. Installation is simple because no ring and pinion setup is required. In addition, no special tools or oils are needed.
The instructions advise me to use 75-140 gear oil. However, the Toyota owners manual recommends using 75-90. Which one do I use?

I recommend using the 75w-140 Gear Oil with your Power Trax Unit. I recommend that it be GL5 rated or better petroleum gear oil. This will be best for the Power Trax and will provide better lubrication for the bearings and the ring and pinion. This the way to go in warm or hot weather or for hard use. If you live where it gets down to freezing temperatures in the winter then it would be best to use the 75w-90 GL5 petroleum
gear oil for those cold winter months. Thank You for your question.

Would you recommend this as a street reolacment for spider gears or mainly off-road?
Walter from on
This unit is good on street and off-road. It has the extra engagement ring so it doesn't bang back in when it engages. It is very smooth on the street compared to the standard lunch box lockers.

Does this need an existing carrier or does this fully replace the spider gears?
Walter from on
It fits into the stock carrier / case replacing the spider gears and side gears. There is nothing else needed for the installation.
