The placement of the bolt in the pinch collar doesn’t allow all of the splines to be use on the steering column shaft. When it is installed it only slips on about 3/4 of an inch because if you slip it on the whole way the bolt won’t go through the groove in the steering column shaft
Will this shaft reduce excess play and wandering common to the original stock shaft coupler at the power steering unit, and at the coupler at the steering column?

Yes the lower coupler is problem they seem to be the most common area for play. This shaft is a very nice upgrade and helps a bunch. The top little stock u-joint also gets a lot of play in it and at the slip area of shaft.
