While most all winches come with a hook, they are inherently unsafe when pulling horizontally. A crane uses a hook but it has gravity to help keep the sling or chain in the bottom of the hook. On a Jeep we are pulling sideways which allows the sling, tree saver, strap etc... to fall out if we have to slack the line, or makes it hard to get the line tight if we are winching ourselves. With this product, you use a shackle that keeps anything that is placed through it in place. This allows you to hook up your tree saver with slack in the line, then walk back to your jeep and take up the slack, all without worrying about it coming loose. MUCH MUCH safer than a hook because the hook can straighten out. Most of our jeeps and winches cannot exceed the working load limit of a 3/4" Shackle, much less the breaking strength.
