Q: What keeps the outer nut from backing off? Is it just tightened so much that the nuts and washer jam together? What is the torque on the outer nut if this is the case? This is on a 74 CJ5. D30 on the front, D44 on the rear. Both have Warn lock outs. Answer this question
A: Hello The front axle would of used the hex style nut not the 4 slot style. Some of the conversion kits did use the Dana 44 style like this kit. You adjust the pre-load on the bearings with the inner nut with the pin in it. then install the washer with holes to line up with the pin. Next install the out nut against the washer and tighten to 60-70 foot pounds. The inner nut can't move since the washer is keyed to the spindle and to the pin in the nut. The original style nut kit would be link the one in this link. http://www.4wheelparts.com/Drivetrain-Differentials/Dana25-27-30-Spindle-Washer-and-Nut-Kit.aspx?t_c=12&t_s=514&t_pt=8318&t_pn=CROA867K Thanks Rody
