    A: Hi Robert The CRO4796903 Planetary gear set wil not fit your 1988 Jeep XJ's 231 Transfer Case, The proper part will be te CRO53006087 http://jo.my/s3sz79 which is a stronger 6 pinion planetary and not the 3 pinion planetary. Thank You
