The positive manual engagement/disengagement of cable lock is prone to failure and it allows for disengagement on vehicles equipped with a front locker. Very useful when making a tight turning radius off-road. Add the option of 2WD low range with full control from inside the vehicle and this is a must have item for your off road vehicle.
I order this to replace a broken vacuum actuator. The install was harder than I expected and was definitely a 2 man job to fish the gable in and around everything. Other pickups may be different but I did not have a real good spot to mount it. I put it above the E brake and it is hard to reach. I will relocate on the next replacement I get. This leads me to the major problem....The knob pulls off rendering it almost inoperable. I have now installed 2 of them (one was warranty replacement) and the knob pulled off the first one the second time I tried to engage 4x4 and the second lasted through 3 engagements. With out the knob you can still engage it with pliers but is not real practical. Customer service has been very good (reason for 3 stars) I am waiting for my second free replacement (third total) to get to me in the mail. I will remount it and as said relocate it but if this one fails I am done with it and going back to the factory system. This is a great concept and if there was just a little more care in design and manufacturing could be a really amazing solution to the factory system. Overall I would say I would recommend it to a friend but be advised that unless I got 2 lemons it is going to fail.
The product is functional and engages on command. I installed this actuator on my 97 ram 2500 cummins since my factory actuator failed. Make sure you zip tie the cable over to the loom of brake lines and other cables on the drivers side of the engine bay. If you do not zip tie the cable at this spot, the cable can catch on the throttle linkage. This is a great product at a great price.
I installed this in my 1985 S-10 truck. I'm a Mechanic and this was the best way to get rid of the vacuum operated front axle. It works great but the every day guy is going to have a hard time with the instructions.
Put this on my 90 YJ. It works great and engages the front axles with ease. The best thing you can do if/when you install this is to think though where you want to route the cable. Once you drilll the hole to run the cable you don't want to have to drill another large hole. On the down side, the housing for the fork is potted metal. Im figuring a way to sheild or put some kind of skip on mine to help protect it.
Great if you put a different transfer case in your truck and don't want to fool with vacuum lines
