When you own a truck, you develop a relationship with your vehicle. You can feel when it needs something and when it's running smooth and easy. There is no sound more worrisome for a truck owner than the sound of the transmission malfunctioning. If you hear a grinding sound when shifting gears, it's time to check the transmission.
Finding the Right Kit
Fixing the transmission on your own can be tricky, but at 4 Wheel Parts, you can find a variety of kits with the parts and tools you need to fix your transmission and get back to off-roading with confidence. Crown Automotive T150 2nd and 3rd Gear Synchronizer Assembly Kit, for example, includes all new parts for 2nd and 3rd gear manual assembly. The Crown Automotive T150 1st and Reverse Gear Synchronizer Assembly is also available for first and second synchronizer assembly.
Before you can replace your transmission parts, you must disassemble the old transmission. Start by taking apart the input shaft rear bearing. Check for damage, like rust, on the gear shifts. Then, remove the old trans synchro, snap ring and the spacer that is in between. Pull the rings off one at a time and check for damage. If they can't be cleaned or flipped, replace them with the new parts from your kit. Build up can usually be removed, but if the teeth of the gears are too worn down, replacing them is recommended.
Add a generous amount of oil to the new rings and install them, making sure the teeth of each ring fits with the others. Clean the coupling sleeve or replace and put it back in its place. Replace the synchro keys once the rings are in place. Replace the synchro on top of the sleeve, the roller bearing and 4th speed gear. You will basically repeat the same process for the output shaft if that needs replacement as well.
