Since 1988, the NP231 has been the Command Trac transfer case used in Cherokees (XJ), Comanches (MJ), and Wranglers (YJ). It has been the Command Trac transfer case in the Grand Cherokee (ZJ) since its introduction. The new Wrangler (TJ) continues to use the NP231. 1987-95 YJ and 1997-04 TJ Wrangler rear of case has circular I.D. tag. Tag has model number, assembly number, serial number and low range ratio. Some 1987 Wranglers came with NP207.
The Dana 300 was used only in CJs from 1980 until 1986. 1980-86 has off-set output shafts. The Model 300 has a lower front output shaft and an upper rear output shaft. The output shaft housings are aluminum. All models have single shift levers. All gears are stamped with 300-X-X.
The Dana 20 was used in CJs from 1972 until 1979. It was introduced in larger Jeep trucks in the 60s, but it wasn't used in any Jeep trucks after 1979. 1972-79 has off-set output shafts. The Borg Warner QuadraTrac transfer case is the transfer case found in 1973-79 FSJ and CJ7 Jeeps. 1976-79 CJ-7 (automatic only) is a CHAIN DRIVE transfer case. The quadratrac was used with an Turbo Hydromatic 400 automatic transmission which featured full-time four wheel drive, all aluminum case.
The Spicer/Dana 18 was used on the first CJs and their military counterparts until 1971. It was also used on all other trucks until around 1965. From 1941-71 front & rear output shafts on lower end of case were used. 1941-68 have a dual shift lever, while 1968-71 V6 models have a single shift lever. All gears are stamped with 18-8-XX.
The Jeep NP242 transfer case was introduced in the 1987 model year as a replacement for the NP228. The 242 premiered in the XJ Cherokee / Wagoneer and MJ Commache as the SelecTrac option. It was used in the 1987-01 XJ Cherokee.
